went to pay, the dreaded tip screen popped up, with options of 10%, 15%, or 20%. I was completely caught off guard and panicked about what to do. On the one hand, this

bridal stylist had provided great service, and spent about an hour with me as I tried on gowns. I wanted to do right by her and didn't want to offend her or communicate I wasn't happy with her service.

And I always tip 20% for services. On the other hand, being asked to tip for such a large purchase seemed wild to me. But I second-guessed my instinct, since I'd never bought a wedding dress or spent so much 1-1 time with a sales consultant before.

Anyway, I stared at the tip screen for way too long, and eventually selected the option to tip 10%, which was a $200 tip. And I STILL felt bad about not tipping a full 20%!
  • 07
It was only after I left that I realized there really isn't an expectation to tip in that situation, since the bridal stylist is likely paid on commission. I was such a sucker for being guilted into a large unplanned tip! Hopefully someone will learn from my mistake.

Big Bread6874 Why tf would u tip for shopping? I would proudly hit the 0% and leave. It's not like you will be back at the wedding dress store unless u get divorced

Frosty Landscape You tip nothing for this service. Many of these people work on salary plus commission. They get paid. It's not your job to pay them. Please write a review of the business and let people know the store is wanting 20% tips for purchases..people need to know this and avoid this business if they can.

Prize-Copy-9861 Why should she tip a salesperson? They should be salaried or get a commission. She paid $2000 for a dress she will wear once. How dare they ask for a tip

Purplish Peenk NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE. They get commission on the sale. DO NOT TIP

MLZO05 Bridal shops are priced that way (expensively) because you're paying for the dress + included personal service. This is the meaning of "boutique"shop; it's not an off-the-rack experience. The employee also gets a commission so the tip is ridiculous

Naive-Horror4209 Why did you tip at all?! Do you tip in a store if a shop assistant is helping you? 200?! Crazy.

legally-redhead OP I wish I hadn't! I was completely caught off guard in the moment and realized I didn't know whether there was some expectation to tip the bridal stylist who'd been working with me. The tip screen implies that the tip is somewhat expected.

Venaegen This system is designed to take advantage of this exact situation - where someone is unsure what is "acceptable" and doesn't want to be r de or disrespectful.

legally-redhead OP Thank you for validating my experience. It's easy to reflect on what I should've done in hindsight, but in the moment when you have to

make a snap decision, it's not that easy. I feel like the tip screen with percentage options for a wedding gown purchase is honestly somewhat predatory of generous, well-meaning customers.
